A pregnant Wichita State student was found dead on Saturday (August 26) in the trunk of her boyfriend's vehicle.

According to People, Alexander Lewis, 22, was arrested Saturday on charges of capital murder in connection to the death of his 19-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Zaiylah Bronson.

Bronson's mother, Taronza Bronson, said her daughter had driven down to Leavenworth, Kansas to tell her that she was expecting just weeks before her death.

“She drove all the way here to surprise me,” Taronza said. “She was excited. They had picked a name and she would not tell me what the baby name is because she wanted it to be a surprise.”

Wichita police began the search for Bronson after one of Lewis' family members told authorities they were suspicious that he had harmed his girlfriend. Lewis allegedly strangled Bronson to death.

Bronson's mother said her daughter was 16 and a half weeks pregnant at the time of her death. She was an excellent student who graduated high school early and began attending Wichita State in 2021, according to the mother.

“The depth of pain that domestic violence inflicts upon its victims and their loved ones is unimaginable,” Bronson’s godmother, Dawn Wilson, wrote on a GoFundMe page. “No one should ever have to endure such suffering, and we must come together to address and prevent such tragedies from occurring.”
