A "mystery" body that was found roughly 27 years ago in Arizona has been identified as a California veteran.

In January 1996, the remains of a 30 to 40-year-old man were found in a desert area near Kingman, Arizona, the Mohave County Sheriff's office said.

The man was recently identified as Sherman George, a veteran from the Los Angeles area, CBS News reports. Officials said George died from a gunshot wound to the head and was buried in a shallow grave.

The discovery comes after sheriff's investigators sent a DNA sample to Othram, a Texas-based forensic research company, in February. Advanced DNA testing led to the identification of George, an Army veteran who frequently went to the deserts in California and Arizona with his military friends, according to the sheriff's office.

George was allegedly estranged from his family and never reported missing, the sheriff's office said. "His identity remained a mystery" until advanced DNA testing was completed.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Mohave County Sheriff's Office Detective Division.
