Medical Interpreters bridge the gap between language services and healthcare settings, and in East Tennessee, Centro Hispano is doing just that.

"In a medical setting, the responsibility of interpreting such sensitive things is really a challenge," Centro Hispano de East Tennessee CEO, Claudia Cabellero shared. She added that the education organization is all about designing and developing sustainable solutions for that very challenge via its "Medical Interpreter Program," which "is all about celebrating who you already are and the value you can bring to the community."

The Medical Interpreter program at Centro Hispano was launched in 2022 and made possible by a grant from Direct Relief's fund for health equity and generous support from Eli Lilly. Ten students graduated from the first cohort, and Centro Hispano has obtained funding from other sources for two additional years.

Students have already served 524 patients and offered more than 785 hours of free medical interpreting.
