Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D) has won re-election.
On Tuesday (November 7), Beshear defeated his Republican challenger, state Attorney General Daniel Cameron, in the race for Kentucky governor, NBC News projected.
As he sought a second term, the Kentucky governor emphasized the state's economic progress over the past four years along with his response to the pandemic and natural disasters, including devastating floods.
Meanwhile, Cameron, who made history in 2019 as Kentucky’s first Black attorney general, promoted ads in which former President Donald Trump encouraged voters to support him. Cameron previously said he was "proud to be endorsed by President Trump" and pledged to support efforts to beat President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election.
In 2020, the state attorney general came under fire when no officers faced charges in the death of Breonna Taylor, a Black woman shot and killed during a no-knock raid of her apartment. Ads released by the Black Voters Matters PAC deemed Cameron an "Uncle Tom," citing that he was "the same man who refused to seek justice for Breonna Taylor."
Beshear's win defied the usual political leanings of the red state of Kentucky. Experts believe his election could serve as a model for other Democrats heading into next year's presidential election.
