A 3-year-old boy in Memphis had died after being hit by a stray bullet on New Year's Eve, CBS News reports.

On Sunday (December 31), Brayden Smith, 3, was shot by a bullet that flew through the window of his home while his family was celebrating New Year's Eve. Police believe the bullet may have been celebratory gunfire, which is illegal in the city of Memphis.

Smith was taken to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition for days before succumbing to his injuries.

"Brayden was three. He's a baby. I don't have my grandson, my daughter doesn't have her son. He's on life support. Turn yourself in," Smith's Grandmother Taysha Davis previously said.

Police said an investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time," Officer Christopher Williams said in a statement, noting that "Investigators are working tirelessly and diligently to bring those responsible to justice."

Smith is one of several children across the country who were hit by stray bullets on New Year's Eve. An 11-year-old girl in Minneapolis was in her bedroom when a bullet came flying through her window minutes after midnight. The bullet struck her in the face.
