A Detroit man died after being attacked by three dogs while walking home from the bus, CBS News reports.

35-year-old Harold Phillips, a father of six children, was attacked by the dogs after getting off a bus at West Chicago and Longacre Street last week.

According to Detroit Animal Control and Care, three dogs escaped a fenced yard on Longacre Street. Phillip was taken to a hospital where he had his right arm amputated, was placed on dialysis, underwent several blood transfusions, and was put in a medically induced coma.

Phillips succumbed to his injuries on Friday (February 2), his family said.

“It’s with deep sadness that I announce Harold’s passing," Phillips' wife, Shauntay, said in a statement. "It’s painful to think of all the important milestones Harold will miss in our children’s lives, from our son’s first basketball game this weekend to our daughter’s upcoming daddy-daughter dance that he was looking forward to. Our lives will never be the same. We are forever grateful for our community’s prayers, donations, and support you’ve given our family.”

Officials said the dogs' owner wasn't in compliance with the city's ordinance and failed to secure the canines. The three dogs involved in the attack were euthanized, and a fourth dog was removed from the home and put in quarantine. The owner was hit with $5,000 in fines.

The Detroit Police Department said it has launched an investigation into the incident.

Phillips' family started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for expenses in the wake of the attack. Family members said they're suing the city of Detroit and the dogs' owner.
