A contractor is facing charges after a Houston woman allegedly signed her home away to him unknowingly, ABC13 reports.
Wanda Jackson, a retired teacher, was kicked out of her home of over 40 years last September after she contracted Malcolm Pryor to do some repairs. Pryor had claimed that Jackson failed to pay him for the job, so he filed a mechanic lien. Jackson then unknowingly signed a warranty deed and gave Pryor ownership of her home.
Jackson's home was passed through different owners for months. According to reports, Pryor initially sold the home for $50,000 but he later took out a loan and repurchased the property for $262,500.
Pryor was approved for the loan through the use of alleged fraudulent financial records. The contractor never paid the mortgage lender, which led to Jackson's home being foreclosed.
The Houston Police Department filed several charges against Pryor including second-degree felony of filing a false statement to obtain credit involving $150,000 to $300,000. Pryor's charges stem from the mortgage lender losing money, not the defrauding of Jackson.
Jackson said she's currently struggling to pay rent on a Houston apartment after the incident.
“I lost EVERYTHING and I truly need help,” Jackson wrote on GoFundMe. “The unscrupulous act of these people, knew I was sick with COVID and they took advantage of me because of my age and my health.”
“All my things were just thrown out on the streets,” she continued. “My need is to raise $20,000 for legal bills & to pay or cover the bills that have occurred since I’ve been kicked out of my house.”
