Rep. Al Green Pushes Slavery Remembrance, Urges Sacred Power Of Vote

At ALC 54, Congressman Al Green of Texas’s 9th District called for Slavery Remembrance Day and Month to honor the lives and sacrifices of enslaved Africans who built the nation’s economic foundation. He stressed that Black Americans need not wait for Congress to legitimize such commemorations, citing the Jewish community’s Holocaust remembrance as a model.

Green also urged awarding a Congressional Gold Medal to enslaved people and condemned political attempts to minimize slavery’s legacy, such as rebranding it as “involuntary relocation.” He additionally addressed Texas redistricting that dismantled his current district, saying he may run in the newly redrawn 18th, historically held by Barbara Jordan. Despite setbacks, Green emphasized voting as sacred, drawing inspiration from John Lewis, and declared that “we the people” will have the last word in protecting democracy.
