Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore, the first Black coach to lead the program, was taken into custody Wednesday night (December 10) — just hours after his dismissal.

According to Washtenaw County Jail records, per CNN, Moore was booked at 10:11 p.m. ET and remained in custody early Thursday morning (December 11). No charges, if any, have been formally announced.

Pittsfield Township police said officers responded to the 3000 block of Ann Arbor–Saline Road on Wednesday to investigate a reported assault. In a news release, police confirmed that a suspect was taken into custody and emphasized that the incident “does not appear to be random in nature.”

“Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details,” the statement read, per CNN. “Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as permissible.”

While the release did not identify Moore by name, earlier in the evening, ESPN reported that police in Saline — a nearby community west of Pittsfield Township — had detained the former coach. As of Thursday morning, the investigation into the alleged assault remains ongoing.

Moore’s arrest came the same day the university announced he had been fired with cause after an internal investigation found he had “engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”

The school said “credible evidence” supported the misconduct finding and reiterated that the university maintains “zero tolerance” for policy violations involving staff relationships.

Moore was promoted to head coach in 2024, succeeding Jim Harbaugh after six seasons on Michigan’s offensive staff. His hiring marked a historic moment for the Wolverines as he became the first Black head coach in program history.
