Trinity Rodman has agreed to a historic new contract with the Washington Spirit that makes her the highest-paid women’s soccer player in the world.
Rodman’s deal carries an annual salary of more than $1 million, her agent, Mike Senkowski, told ESPN. The agreement ends months of uncertainty after Rodman became a free agent at the end of the 2025 season.
“I’ve made the DMV my home and the Spirit my family, and I knew this was where I wanted to enter the next chapter of my career,” Rodman said in a statement. “We’re chasing championships and raising the standard, and I can’t wait to keep doing that with my teammates and the best fans in the NWSL.”
Rodman, a key figure for the U.S. women’s national team, reportedly drew strong interest from top clubs overseas, particularly in England. According to ESPN, the international offers exceeded what most NWSL teams could match under the league’s salary cap.
An earlier attempt to sign Rodman to a backloaded four-year deal was blocked in November after NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman ruled that the structure “violated the spirit of the league.” However, the league’s board of governors later approved a new “High Impact Player” rule, allowing teams to exceed the salary cap by up to $1 million for elite players who meet performance and marketability standards. The new rule paved the way for Rodman’s landmark contract.
“Trinity is a generational player,” Spirit owner Michele Kang said in a statement. “She represents the future of this club and the future of women’s soccer. This agreement reflects our belief that elite talent deserves elite commitment.”
