A 21-year-old Black man was found hanging from a tree at a Cobb County, Georgia, park last week. Police say there is no evidence of foul play.

Kyle Bassinga was discovered on February 18 at Fair Oaks Park after being reported missing on February 15, according to 11Alive. Authorities have ruled his death a suicide.

But the manner in which he was found — hanging from a tree — immediately sparked concern online and within the community.

During a press conference on Monday (February 23), Cobb Police Chief Dan Ferrell said, per 11 Alive, investigators have found “no indicators that another person was involved in this incident.” He stated that, to this point, there is not “one piece of evidence” suggesting anyone else was present when Bassinga died.

The investigation remains active, Ferrell said, with detectives continuing to review video footage, phone records, witness statements, and physical evidence.

Cobb Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Lisa Cupid acknowledged the historical weight surrounding the case. “This is a violent manner that has caused many to think of the days of slavery and of Jim Crow,” Cupid said. “I hear you, I understand, and we are sensitive to that here in this county.”

Cupid added that while the community deserves answers, Bassinga’s family will receive a private briefing before additional details are publicly released. That meeting was delayed due to a relative traveling from outside the country, but is expected soon.

The discovery prompted skepticism on social media, with some residents questioning how foul play could be ruled out so quickly. Ferrell addressed that directly, saying law enforcement’s role is to “follow the evidence and communicate verified facts,” not respond to speculation.

Bassinga’s family has asked for privacy as they grieve. In a statement last week, they said they are focused on burying their son.

As of now, officials maintain there is no evidence of homicide. The investigation remains open pending final reviews and the family briefing.
