The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) has tapped Dr. James H. Johnson, a North Carolina Central University alumnus and longtime professor, to help shape the future of its entrepreneurship programs.
Johnson has been named TMCF’s distinguished faculty-in-residence, where his work will focus on curriculum design, strategic program development and accreditation support for the organization’s Innovation & Entrepreneurship initiatives.
“Dr. Johnson is a giant in his field and our students and member institutions are fortunate to benefit from his expertise,” TMCF President and CEO Dr. Harry L. Williams said. “His work and research in the areas of entrepreneurship, demographics and economic development will help guide our transformation of our Innovation & Entrepreneurship initiatives.”
Johnson comes to TMCF after a lengthy academic career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as the William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of strategy and entrepreneurship.
He also served as director of the Urban Investment Strategies Center at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise.
During his academic career, Johnson published more than 100 scholarly research articles and three research monographs. He also co-edited four theme issues of scholarly journals.
Before his time at UNC-Chapel Hill, Johnson served as a faculty member at UCLA.
His new role also brings Johnson back to an organization representing his HBCU roots. He earned his undergraduate degree from North Carolina Central University, a TMCF member school, before earning a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University.
