Rep. Nikema Williams is working to help Black families protect their homes, land and generational wealth.
During a conversation with the Black Information Network at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference, the Georgia Democrat discussed heirs' property, public health and the importance of civic engagement.
Williams reflected on growing up in rural Alabama on family land that had been passed down without formal legal deeds, connecting her experience to families who face difficulties proving ownership of inherited property.
Heirs' property can make it difficult for families to establish clear ownership, access financing or protect inherited land. Williams has pushed legislation aimed at helping families clear titles and preserve their property.
A federal study of heirs' property based on Williams' HEIRS Act was included in the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which became law in July. Williams said the measure is part of a broader effort to protect homeownership and generational wealth.
Williams also addressed public health challenges in her district, raising concerns about HIV and sexually transmitted infections as well as the return of preventable diseases such as measles. She called for sustained federal investment in public health and research and stressed the importance of combating vaccine misinformation.
The congresswoman also discussed safety at HBCUs following threats against campuses across the country. Earlier this year, Williams presented Morris Brown College with $700,000 in federal funding for campus security improvements after the Atlanta HBCU was among schools targeted by threats.
Williams encouraged voters to remain civically engaged and participate in elections while paying attention to issues affecting their everyday lives, including housing and the cost of living.
