Sen. Cory Booker is calling for greater government accountability and structural reforms while outlining priorities ranging from the cost of living to artificial intelligence and mental health.
During a conversation with the Black Information Network at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference, the New Jersey Democrat discussed FBI oversight, Supreme Court reform, college athletics and the challenges facing Black communities.
Booker criticized FBI Director Kash Patel and raised concerns about the treatment of whistleblowers and the use of government resources. Questions surrounding Patel's use of FBI aircraft and resources have drawn congressional scrutiny, while Patel has defended his leadership of the bureau amid criticism from Democratic lawmakers.
Booker also discussed the upcoming midterm elections, arguing that Democrats need to present voters with an agenda focused on everyday economic concerns, including grocery, healthcare and other household costs.
On government reform, Booker highlighted his support for 18-year active terms for Supreme Court justices. He and several Senate colleagues reintroduced legislation this summer that would establish regular appointments to the court every two years and move justices to a more limited role after 18 years of hearing its full docket.
The senator also addressed the ongoing debate over college athletics. Booker has opposed the Protect College Sports Act, arguing that provisions governing athlete compensation and legal protections for athletic organizations could hurt college athletes. Supporters of the legislation say it would provide national standards while protecting scholarships, healthcare and athletes' ability to earn money from their name, image and likeness.
Turning to artificial intelligence, Booker called for a special session of Congress focused on establishing safeguards and a national framework for the rapidly developing technology.
Booker also stressed the importance of addressing mental health and suicide in Black communities, calling for greater investment in mental healthcare and efforts to reduce the stigma surrounding seeking help.
