Rep. Jim Clyburn says understanding the country's history is essential to navigating its present and future.
During a conversation with the Black Information Network's Vanessa Tyler at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 55th Annual Legislative Conference, the South Carolina Democrat reflected on voting, Reconstruction and one decision from his own past that he now says was a mistake.
Clyburn pointed to Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1967 book, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?, while emphasizing the importance of studying history and learning from what came before.
He discussed the disputed presidential election of 1876 and the Compromise of 1877, which effectively brought Reconstruction to an end as federal troops were withdrawn from the South. Clyburn used the period to underscore his larger message about the importance of voting and the consequences political decisions can have for generations.
Clyburn also reflected on his past support for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas during Thomas' contentious 1991 confirmation process.
Last month, Clyburn publicly called that support a "mistake," saying he had believed Thomas' background and experiences would inform his approach to civil rights issues on the Supreme Court. Thomas was ultimately confirmed by the Senate in a 52-48 vote.
More than three decades later, Clyburn said he views his support for Thomas as one of the consequential mistakes of his career, pointing to the justice's subsequent record on the court.
For Clyburn, both episodes underscore a broader lesson: decisions made in one moment can shape the country's direction for decades to come.
