Rep. Steven Horsford says families want solutions to the rising cost of everyday life, from housing and groceries to healthcare.
During a conversation with the Black Information Network at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 55th Annual Legislative Conference, the Nevada Democrat discussed affordability, housing and the role of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Horsford reflected on the CBC's history and its continued role in advocating for Black communities and working families. The Congressional Black Caucus was formally established in 1971, bringing Black lawmakers together to advance issues affecting Black Americans across the country.
Turning to the economy, Horsford pointed to high housing, grocery and healthcare costs as major concerns for families. He also discussed Nevada's tourism-dependent economy and argued that federal tariff policies have added pressure on workers, consumers and small businesses.
Housing has been a particular focus for Horsford. He backed the bipartisan 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which became law this summer and included provisions from his HOME Act aimed at increasing transparency surrounding large institutional investors purchasing single-family homes.
Horsford has argued that competition from corporate investors has made it more difficult for Nevada families to buy homes. His office says Las Vegas ranks second nationally in investor-owned homes.
He also reflected on the importance of civic engagement and encouraged young people and other voters to remain involved in the issues affecting their communities.
For Horsford, the work of gatherings like ALC is about taking information and conversations happening in Washington back into communities across the country.
