Rep. Glenn Ivey says civic engagement can't end once voters cast their ballots.
During a conversation at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 55th Annual Legislative Conference, the Maryland Democrat discussed election protection, government oversight and the economic pressures facing families.
Ivey, who is serving alongside Rep. Alma Adams as an honorary co-chair of this year's ALC, described the gathering as an opportunity for attendees to organize, exchange ideas and take what they've learned back into their communities.
With the November midterm elections approaching, Ivey emphasized preparing not only for Election Day but also for the legal and procedural issues that could follow.
He pointed to challenges surrounding the certification of the 2020 presidential election as part of the reason he believes election protection efforts should include legal preparation and safeguards surrounding the certification and peaceful transfer of power.
Ivey also turned to the cost of everyday life, highlighting groceries, healthcare and other expenses affecting working families. He criticized the Trump administration's tariff and healthcare policies, arguing that they have placed additional financial pressure on households.
The congressman also discussed Congress' oversight responsibilities and said the House has tools, including subpoena authority, to investigate executive branch actions and federal spending.
Ivey currently serves on the House Judiciary, Homeland Security and Ethics committees, positions that place him directly in congressional debates over government accountability and oversight.
As ALC comes to a close, Ivey encouraged attendees to carry the energy of the conference into their own communities and remain engaged in the issues affecting them.
