Rep. Terri Sewell says protecting voting access and addressing the rising cost of everyday life are among the issues at the center of her work in Congress.

During a conversation with the Black Information Network's Vanessa Tyler at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 55th Annual Legislative Conference, the Alabama Democrat discussed voting rights, healthcare and affordability ahead of the November midterm elections.

Sewell, the first Black woman elected to Congress from Alabama and chair of the CBCF Board of Directors, also reflected on this year's ALC theme, "Rooted, Ready & Rising," and the role the conference plays in bringing Black communities together around policy and civic engagement.

With Election Day approaching, Sewell discussed concerns about voting access and efforts to protect eligible voters. She serves as the ranking Democrat on the House Administration Committee's Subcommittee on Elections and has been a longtime advocate for restoring federal voting rights protections.

Sewell said the midterm elections will also determine the balance of power in Congress and its ability to provide oversight of the executive branch.

She also discussed what Democrats would prioritize if they gain control of the House, including healthcare affordability. Sewell currently co-convenes House Democrats' Cost of Living Healthcare Working Group, which is developing proposals aimed at lowering healthcare costs.

During the conversation, Sewell pointed to Affordable Care Act tax credits, Medicare and Medicaid as areas of focus while also highlighting the broader cost pressures facing families.

Sewell said the goal is to develop an agenda that addresses everyday concerns, from healthcare to the cost of living, while strengthening Congress' oversight role.
