Yusef Jackson is reflecting on the legacy of his father, Rev. Jesse Jackson, while preparing Rainbow PUSH Coalition for its next chapter.
During the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 55th Annual Legislative Conference, Jackson, president and CEO of Rainbow PUSH, spoke about his father's life, the response to his passing and his vision for continuing the organization's work.
Rev. Jackson died on February 17 at the age of 84 after more than six decades of civil rights activism. His son expressed gratitude for the prayers, memories and stories the family has received from people around the world.
Jackson said one of his father's defining qualities was his relentless optimism and his belief in the inherent value of every person, principles he said continue to guide him today.
He also reflected on his father's early activism. At 18, Jesse Jackson joined seven other Black students in a 1960 sit-in at the whites-only Greenville County Public Library in South Carolina. The group, known as the Greenville Eight, was arrested, and their protest helped lead to the integration of the city's public libraries later that year.
As he looks toward the future of Rainbow PUSH, Yusef Jackson said the organization is taking an intentional approach to determining what comes next rather than attempting to replicate his father's leadership.
He described a 12-to-18-month period focused on evaluating the organization's structure, strengthening its media and communications operation and developing sustainable initiatives with measurable results.
Jackson also introduced what he calls "cultural maturity," encouraging long-term thinking around financial savings, homeownership, education and civic engagement.
He said he is particularly encouraged by the energy and curiosity of younger generations and believes the next chapter of progress will require leadership spread across communities rather than resting on one person.
For Jackson, carrying his father's work forward isn't about becoming another Jesse Jackson. It's about preserving the principles behind the work while building something designed for the generation that comes next.
