California School Board President Resigns After Wife’s Racist Remarks

The president of a San Francisco Bay Area school board stepped down after his wife posted racist remarks about Vice president-elect Kamala Harris

Jon Venverloh, president of the Las Lomitas Elementary School District in Menlo Park, announced he was resigning on Sunday (November 8).

That same day, his wife, Mehridith Philips Venverloh tweeted about the vice president-elect’s qualifications stating that, “all she needs to be qualified is a black (profane term for female genitalia)! No brain needed!”

She continued tweeting, making racist and profane remarks, immediately sparking outrage from parents and families in the school district, who called for Venverloh’s resignation.

Venverloh, a former Google executive, announced his resignation stating that his disagreed with his wife’s “reprehensible views,” adding that with her tweets, “I know that my continued service would be a distraction from the work that needs to be done.”

He still had two years left on his term with the school board after being elected in 2018.

His wife, a supporter of Donald Trump, made an apology for her tweets, “I am deeply sorry and ashamed,” she said, calling the posts “vulgar” and saying they were made “in a moment of disappointment.”

In her apology she also stated she was in the process of stopping medication for a “debilitating neurological disease” in preparation for a planned hospitalization.

She went on to say that the change in her medication affected her judgment and led to the tweets.

Other members of the school district denounced the posts calling them, “racially-based and gender-based hatred.”
