Update (November 10): Autopsy reports have cited carbon monoxide poisoning as the possible cause of death, Bloomberg reports.

Three American friends were found dead in their Mexico Airbnb they rented to celebrate the Day of the Dead, authorizes and family confirmed Wednesday (November 9).

Kandace Florence, a 28-year-old small business owner in Virginia Beach, was staying at the Airbnb in Mexico City, Mexico with high school friend Jordan Marshall, a 28-year-old teacher, along with Marshall's friend Courtez Hall, family told NBC News. The trio took a trip to the city in commemoration of Día de Los Muertos, a holiday that traditionally takes place on Nov. 1 and 2.

On the night of October 30, Florence was on the phone with her boyfriend when she told him she wasn't feeling well. The call dropped and, once Florence's boyfriend wasn't able to reach her again, he contacted the Airbnb host to do a wellness check on the group.

Authorities arrived at the rental and found Florence, Marshall, and Hall dead. According to NBC News, an investigation into their official cause of death is still underway.

The State Department confirmed the group's death in a statement to NBC News.

"We are closely monitoring local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death. We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance," the department said.

Airbnb called the incident a "tragedy."

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our thoughts are with the families and loved ones as they grieve such an unimaginable loss," Airbnb said in a statement Wednesday.

The Airbnb listing has been suspended from the site and its future reservations canceled, according to the company. Airbnb said it has been in contact with the host of the rental and the U.S. Embassy as it investigates the fatal incident.

"Our priority right now is supporting those impacted as the authorities investigate what happened, and we stand ready to assist with their inquiries however we can," their statement said.
