A 2-year-old boy who went missing amid his mother's murder has been found dead in the jaws of an alligator in Florida, NBC News reports.

Taylen Mosley, 2, and his 20-year-old mother Pashun Jeffery were last seen by family members on Wednesday (March 29). The following day, loved ones requested an apartment manager check on the mother and son when they were unable to reach Jeffrey, St. Petersburg police said.

Jeffrey was found dead in the apartment, with police noting that she had been stabbed multiple times. Taylen remained missing until Friday (March 31) when he was found in an alligator's mouth about 10 miles from the apartment.

Police Chief Anthony Holloway said a detective shot and killed the alligator.

“We didn’t want to find him this way, but at least we can bring some closure to that family now,” Holloway said at a press conference.

The child’s father, Thomas Mosley, is facing two counts of first-degree murder. Mosley checked himself into a hospital with cuts on his arms and hands, Holloway said. He remained hospitalized as of Friday (March 31).

Mosley requested a lawyer and hasn't spoken to detectives, per the police chief. A medical examiner will determine his son's official cause of death.
